Book Review: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

This book resembles a lot of Bollywood movies I have seen where a couple is separated by situations beyond their control and when one of them finds someone else, the other one turns up.

Roy and Celeste are married for a year or so and then Roy gets false accused of Rape and is imprisoned for 12 years. Celeste waits patiently then realized that Andre, her childhood friend is her one true love. Andre and Celeste are all set to get engaged and then out of the blue Roy’s conviction is overturned and he get to release from prison way to early. Tragic right ! Only here the emotional struggle of people caught in this love triangle is explained in detail. Like how Roy and Celeste fell apart. How Andre and Celeste came to know that they are made for each other and blah blah.

There is so much detailing that it makes you feel that everything is happening in slow motion. I am not the one for love triangle stories but this book is captivating. The only thing I couldn’t wrap my head around is to Roy and Andre, Celeste seems a very special woman but from the story I couldn’t make out what was so special about Celeste except she made dolls and she smells nice (this particular detail is mentioned more than a couple of times). I am giving this book 4 stars because whatever each character in this book is experiencing is quite human. The emotional struggle is quite real.
